Comments
This work uses a text drawn from Finnegans Wake by James Joyce, which Cage found profoundly inspiring. The voice uses only 3 pitches, and vocal production is to be without vibrato, as in folksong. The piano is closed, and the pianist taps on the instrument’s body with fingers or knuckles.
